Doctor Complaint: Radha Rao M.d. - Veterans Affairs Med Center
I returned from Afghanistan in December 2007 and filed for VA disability compensation. I was ordered to report to the Michael E. Debakey Medical Center, Houston, TX for compensation exams. I was also assigned a primary clinic and a primary physician Radha Rao M.D.
Dr. Rao is supposed to be coordinating my routine healthcare, however she has ignored every serious healthcare complaint I have made and does nothing but refers me to other clinics that have nothing to do with my healthcare complaints for consults without my informed consent. I have had numerous appointment letters sent to me stating I should report to various clinics and various departments for various procedures and lab tests that were never discussed with me or received my informed consent. When I try to find out what is going on or why I am supposed to be somewhere for some test or procedure, no one knows and tells me that my doctor should have discussed this with me. I had an EKG at the same hospital and it showed that I had an enlarged right atrium, which is usually from high blood pressure, and no one has discussed the results of this EKG with me and I would have never known except I got a copy of my medical records and saw it for myself. I had a biopsy of my scalp done four months ago and no one has discussed the results with me. This lack of informed consent has been going on from day one and I have complained to everyone at the VA hospital and other agencies of the Veterans Department and nothing has changed.
I complained about high blood pressure, 220/120 with arteries literally bulging out of my forehead and sometimes from behind my knees and on my side (where the aortas are located). I went to another hospital via ambulance on one occasion because my blood pressure would not go down. The doctors at the VA hospital have refused to run tests to see if I have blockage in any of my arteries. They have students examining me without my permission and when I complain, they threaten to send me to mental health. One doctor actually made an appointment with their “Women Wellness Clinic” without my consent and when I found out it was a mental health clinic, I cancelled the appointment.
On March 23, 2011 I showed up for another appointment I received via mail that I had no idea why I was going there. It was an appointment with Dr. Rao, my primary physician. Dr. Rao told me I was supposed to get blood drawn before I saw her. I told her no one had informed me of this. I showed Dr. Rao my appointment letter and it did not state I had lab work. Dr. Rao told me to go immediately and get my blood drawn. I asked why. She told me some other doctor had ordered it because he thought I had Reynaud Disease. I told her there is no lab test to diagnose Reynaud Disease. She agreed and stated he just wanted to test for a specific antigen. I asked what antigen and wanted details. She refused. She stated …”either get the blood drawn or I will discontinue all your medications.”
I told Dr. Rao that I have tried several times to get blood drawn from the VA lab and the employees there do not know the difference between a tourniquet and a constricting band and they use a tourniquet on everyone and cut off arterial blood flow and they refuse to modify their technique for me.
Not only does this routine practice of application of a tourniquet that cuts off arterial blood flow traumatize the venous blood sample, but it is painful and traumatizes the patient. It hurts me in the extreme and causes arterial vessel spasms and I always have to stop the procedure before I faint.
Dr. Rao told me that I had to endure this malpractice and physical abuse because….”everyone else does.”
I told Dr. Rao that excuse is unacceptable and she can do whatever she feels she has to do and I will do the same.
Dr. Rao then told me to leave the clinic and find other healthcare and that she had already cancelled all my medications because I refused to be physically abused by lab to draw blood for an unnecessary blood test that she refuses to discuss with me. The only blood work needed to continue my medications is for the synthroid I’m taking for my thyroid, however, no thyroid tests were ordered. I refuse to be blackmailed into consenting to procedures and appointments that are not needed and/or have not been discussed with me in detail so that an informed consent can be given and I refused to be punished for refusing such procedures.
I’m no lawyer, but I know if I had done this as a nurse, it would be criminal. What do you think?
