Doctor Complaint: Lazaro Garcia - Healthsouth Doctors' Hospital
My grandmother Rosa Lopez-Recio had a stroke July 19,2010. After her stroke she was told she would never speak, eat or walk again. We decided to take her home with us and take full care of her. She was in and out of the hospital for minor things like no bowl movements for a week or a little water in her lungs. In April of 2011 I was told that my grandmother needed some antibiotics in order to make her get better. They asked for consent to go ahead and put a PICC line. She went back home with a PICC line and antibiotics. My grandmother responded to me at certain times with a Yes or No, and she would say my name. She also would sit in a chair and move back and forth. I was told by her therapist she had a chance at recovery. This all changed when her arm got swollen because there was a clot in her arm from the PICC line. She went back to the hospital at the ending of April. From April 25 to May 26 2011 she had the worst care I have ever seen. Nurses did not visit her at all. She was left dirty when she had a bowl movement, and was not turned every 3 hours. I found people in her room watching Television that worked in the hospital. On May 4th, 2011 a social worker called and said my grandmother would be going home soon. On May 5th I noticed my grandmother was not acting like herself. She was sleeping the whole day. So I told the nurse that something was wrong with her. She then told me her vitals were fine to not worry. My grandmother was like that for 3 days. Until the doctor told us that she had toxic shock. She was then transferred to ICU where they said her kidneys were failing. She just got worst from there on out. She died on May 26th, 2011 at 11:11AM. I was present when she passed away and the nurses did not know how to tell me that she had passed away. I had people come inside to move her, until I asked at what time she passed away and they stood there in shock because they did not know and they were still moving her. In her stay at Doctors hospital, she suffered. She was not changed properly and above all had her PEG dressing not changed for a whole week. I have pictures to prove the lack of care as well as the worms that grew on the PEG dressing for not being changed for a week. The service was horrible. And I am positive there was medical malpractice.
