Doctor Complaint: Unknown - Florida Hospital
On September 5, 2010 my daughter went to E. R. at Florida Hospital East Orlando with a smashed toe. She arrived at 4: 30 pm. and was taken to have an X-ray within an hour. After waiting for hours in the waiting room, (definitely not 60 minutes or less like you advertise) she was taken in about 7:30 pm to an equipment supply room. The nurses said they would put her in a room with a bed as soon as one became available. She was in severe pain and was refused any pain pills. She began to get a fever and felt nauseous from being in shock, but no doctor or nurses would help her. Her pain in her toe was throbbing so badly after 4 hours of sitting in a wheelchair that I propped her leg up on my chair. No other chairs were in the room so my husband and I were left to both stand the remaining 4 hours in the hospital. I finally sit on the floor.
About 9:30 a nurse finally came into the room, but she was only there to get a urine test. At this point I was losing my patience and I said, “What does a broken toe have anything to do with a urine test?” How ridiculous…we refused the test, what is the point of adding something so unnecessary onto our bill? What we really needed was a nurse to come in and HELP with the situation. We kept on waiting because they said that the X- ray was sent to another FL Hospital to be read. This was only a broken toe and it turned out to be a nightmare. I never heard such a thing as to send an X-ray to another Hospital to be read.
Finally, Dr. Molins came in about 10:00 pm and numbed my daughter’s toe from the pain. She said that she would put her in a room shortly and her leg would be put up in a gurney. Well… that never happened. She stated that shortly a podiatrist would be available to do the surgery.
Finally at l1:30 pm the Podiatrist came to see what was wrong. He brought a student in who was very unprofessional and kept texting on her phone in front of all of us. She numbed my daughter’s toe again before they began the surgery. We were never asked if it would be ok for a student to operate and at first we didn’t know she was a student; it became very clear once the surgery started. She numbed my daughter’s toe and had to stick the needle in at least 8 different times before the toe was numb. This took about 5 minutes. I had no idea that my daughter was going to be a guinea pig.
The student performed the so called “surgery” kneeling on the floor with my daughter still in the wheelchair with her leg propped up on the same chair as before.
My Daughter was about to pass out because they started to work and there was still an area that was not numb. She was given extra shots. Since she was still sitting in the wheelchair and not laying down she felt very dizzy and was doing everything she could to stay calm and not pass out. I took her head and put it up against my shoulders as the student worked with her. The Podiatrist told the student every move to make.
We were told that disposable stitches were being used, but this was not true.
Finally around 12:00 am the “surgery” was finished. She arrived at 4:30 pm, all that time for a broken toe? Your advertisement for “60 minutes or less” in the E.R. is a joke! You need to take down your billboards and get if off your website because it’s a lie. We were taken to an area to pay the bill. When she gave us the amount of $ 1.500.00 we almost had a heart attack after we were treated like crap we couldn’t believe it got worse.
We were told that if we paid immediately we would save 40% and that would be it. We asked if we would get billed for anything later and the woman said, “No.” So we paid. The woman said, “You are all set.” She never said, “This is just part of your bill, you will receive additional bills later.” Of course she wasn’t going to say that. We were trapped.
The bills have kept coming. So far we have 4 bills even for the X ray that was paid within the first bill. All this bills for a smashing toe, and the worse part, you don’t specify what are these bills for. Florida Hospital, you should be ashamed of yourself. You are robbing people, the people who don’t have insurance, you call yourself a Seventh Day Advents Church Hospital? Wow!!!!
The bills keep on coming and I don’t have any idea what they are for. None of the bills even explain what the amount is for. And one bill says I need to send payment to North Carolina??? Why North Carolina??? I think the amount we paid in full was cruel and plain robbery, so why do you keep adding more to it?
I want you to know this, I have picture of the smashed toe and since she didn’t use the disposable stitches as we were told, she waited and waited and the stitches never dissolved so they grew among the flesh leaving the toe looking horrible like a cauliflower. You have destroyed her toe forever.
So I want you to stop harassing my daughter. She can hardly pay her utility bills. We as parents paid her bill in full as we were told., you set a trap for us that day and we fell but this time we are not going to fall again in the same trap.
If you keep sending me bills I will take the pictures that I have and you will hear from my lawyer. You should be paying us for what you did; we were treated like you expected to be treated in a remote country, never in USA.
My daughter does not have insurance, and we paid her bill in full just like your employer said and we are done with you.
I will put a complaint on line for everyone to read about you, although there are so many people that have complaints about Florida Hospital being the WORST of all hospitals in Florida.
