Doctor Complaint: The Joint Rehab Floor - Lee Memorial Health System

My brother was in a horrible car accident and had a series of profound fractures and breaks in his pelvis and hip. He was sent to Lee Memorial from Punta Gorda as the only doc willing to do his surgery was there. He finally got an ambulance transfer to Lee Memorial nine hours after his accident. We were told by Punta Gorda that his surgery would likely be emergency and there was concern of shards being close to his organs. His films never arrived with us. We were then berated by the ER nurse who rather than listen to us about his history up to that point said, " I have 8 other patients and he probably won't get surgery til next tuesday....hip fractures can wait." We tried again to explain the extreme nature of his breaks but she wouldn't listen because the films weren't there and surely WE the family must be wrong. Anyway, I demanded immediate new films and then they did it and he was admitted. Upon moving him to his bed they shifted him to roughly and his hip bone collapsed further causing horrifying pain. We begged for more and better pain control. We were basically treated like because he was young (40) and in an accident that somehow he should feel his pain and maybe be more careful in the future. Nurses kept asking us if he was "at fault" or on a "motorcycle" . Um....NOPE but why would that matter???? His surgery was the next day. The surgeon was amazing and was firm that his toes on that leg not see one ounce of weight for three months. His was full of pins and plates. The nurses were supposed be in every half hour that night post op. They didn't come back in for three HOURS. I'm glad I stayed. His respiratory rate kept depressing and I watched him like a hawk. He kept choking and coughing and screaming in pain. NO ONE. We buzzed. NO ONE. I spent the night.
The next day I left and came back to find my brother having extreme bowel issues. They placed him in a chair, no walker, suppository in him, next to the bathroom with no buzzer? How was he supposed to get to the toilet when it kicked in? I kept telling every nurse that he wasn't supposed to put weight on it. EVERY nurse said "Oh no....they like hip patients to get up and on it as soon as possible." I would explain the nature of his injury. FINALLY one of them checked the wipe board in his room and saw the code for non weight bearing 2 person assist. She said, " HUH." and left. I was terrified to leave from that point on. THEN when exhaustion set in the next day I left and came back to find he had been taken for a CT scan for broken ribs and a suspicion of lung puncture. WHAT??? Took me six hours, three fights and a patient advocate to intervene to find out that this was NOT my brother they were talking about. However, he did get the CT scan done. Whoops. Then three days post op they discharged him. The antibiotics had kicked in with more bowel problems and we begged them for three hours for an adult diaper so the man could leave with some degree of dignity and feeling secure in the fact he won't have an accident on the way home. The nurse who was supposed to get it walked by (three hours I'd been asking for it) and declared she was going to dinner. I was standing in the door and I finally saw the charge nurse (who was not happy with me for getting the patient advocate involved the day before) and said please can we get help here and the dinner break nurse was suddenly "Oh I'm sorry I forgot let me get that for you." She went to a closet a few feet away from me. I could have done that hours before without my brother sitting in a chair in agony in an awkward position waiting for their help to get dressed. We felt so scared they were discharging him so soon but at that point we were scared to stay. Never. EVER have I seen such incompetence. Every nurse replied to every request by informing me of their patient load. How is that appropriate. Never leave your loved one alone in this hospital. Be aggressive. Be polite but FIRM and don't be afraid of them.

I had the same situation. My husband had bypass surgery, no one checked on us all night. I had to ask for assistance with shaving/bathing and linens
(none in the room) three times before anyone complied. It is as if we weren't even there. The overweight nurses sat at the desk eating most of the time we were there. Since this is the only system in the county, I now have to drive 150 miles for planned surgeries. I don't know what will happen if I have an emergency???? This is why competition is so important. There needs to be another hospital in the county.
