Doctor Complaint: Not Applicable - Phoenix Children's Hospital

I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner. While on call last night, my patient's mother called to report a mental health emergency, but that on entering Phoenix Children's Hospital ER, there were about 100 people waiting, and that the line for triage was out the door. I could hear the noise in the background.

Due to the severity of my patient's symptoms, I directed the family to go to another hospital in the area, where she was treated promptly and determined she had a seizure and needed to see a neurologist.

I was appalled at the family's description of the state of the ER. I will direct my patients to other hospitals from now on.
