Doctor Complaint: Emergency Dept. - Northside Hospital
I took my husband to the ER late in the night as he developed intense sharp pains in the back, sides and stomach. I dropped him at the ER door and parked the car in parking - not lot right there and ran in to find the nurse at the receiving desk verbally abusing my husband. She was say that he "can't just walk up here and expect bla, bla bla. You got to give me a name. He could barely stand or speak he was in so much pain and was trying to talk and she was just yelling at him. I told her I was his wife and told her his name, at which she snapped at me "He got to tell me!" In the same breath she continued her verbal tirade against the poor suffering man.
My husband tried to stumble over to a seat in the lobby and could not reach the first chair before he fell to the floor vomiting violently. She did nothing. I do need to make another point. At this time, in case you were wondering, there were no other people waiting in line for the desk and not one person in the lobby in the chairs. There were also no medical staff to be seen. No one came to help. I began to wonder if this were some bad joke and this not really an emergency room of a hospital - supposedly one of the "good" hospitals in Atlanta (now I know that is a joke).
I begged her to get me some wet towels, a pan, something! She did nothing! I looked around and saw a restroom door and ran for it to get wet paper towels to help wipe the vomit from his face. She did nothing.
Finally after about 5 minutes or so she told him to go into a room. He could not get up and walk, so she brought a wheelchair, but did nothing to help me get him into it. She wheeled him into the room and closed the door.
I got him out of the chair and into the bed. We waited. . . we waited. . . we waited. After quite a while, I went out of the4 room and looked for anyone else. I now found two medical staff people at he corner and asked for help. They said they had not known anyone was here. So, in other words, she had told no one, and we would have just stayed in the room untreated forever or until the cleaning crew came.
So now that a real human being with half a brain and a modicum of human compassion was informed, the hospital experience began.
This person is an atrocity and has no business working with human beings at all, but especially not with people who are seriously ill or injured and in need of care. To drive the point home, look at the economy. There are many wonderful caring and qualified people who are out of work and yet the hospital entrusts this position of care and responsibility to a person like this!
The attending nurse and doctor were fine, but that is insufficient. They personally apologized for this egregious lack of care, but we have not had one word form Northside about how horribly my husband was treated. Oh, yeah, in case you are thinking that they perhaps treated him like that for lack of money or insurance, that is not the case. We have good coverage, thankfully, but she did not even bother to find out. She was not even cooperative about getting his name!
Until this I had never experienced any treatment this bad except for Grady hospital which is another horror story. We are well traveled and while American's fear medical care in third world countries, from a humanistic standpoint, it is actually much, much better than this.
Northside, human decency, common courtesy and compassion is not too much to ask and the very least one should expect from a hospital. This is a disgrace to the medical profession.
Northside, please look it up and take some action: Patient: Djamel Saiah. Date: 12/06/2011, Time: 12:00 to 3:19am
