Doctor Complaint: ? - Baptist Hospital Of Miami
On Saturday, 12/11/2010, while working in my house garage relocating some boxes which contained Christmas ornament, I apparently pulled something in my lower back, as I had to stop immediately due to an intense lower back pain. I spent most of the day and Saturday night in bed, taking Motrin every 6 hours but to no avail. On Sunday morning, I was not able to stand upright and to make just one step it took tremendous effort with the help of my wife. Then, realizing the discomfort and lower back pain were getting worse, my wife and I decided to go to the Emergency Department at Baptist Hospital in Kendall. Upon arrival, as my wife went to park our vehicle, I walked by myself to the front counter of the Emergency area. I was surprise to see several employees behind the counter, including a security officer and no one approached me to offer their assistance, since by the way I was walking it would have been quite apparent to anyone I was in acute pain and a “wheelchair” would have been greatly appreciated; but again, no one seemed to care or noticed my urgency. I was asked by the front counter attendant to fill out a form with my physical complaint and to sit and wait to be called. Approximately 20 minutes later, I was called to a small booth or office to speak to a Nurse, who took my temperature and asked me from a one to ten what was my pain level. I answered a “7” but said, someone else would say a “10”. Note* Keeping in mind that when the Nurse called me to her office, she had again seen me walk slowly, bending forward in obvious pain and without the help of a wheelchair. I felt insulted by her insensitivity asking what grade level of pain I had; although I never said anything negative and I continued rendering the answers to all her questions. The interview lasted 3 or 4 minutes, then she said go back and we will call you in a few minutes. I again walked back with the help of my wife and waited in the lobby area for over 45 minutes. While waiting, me and my wife were able to observed several patients that had arrived to the Emergency Department after my arrival that were referred almost immediately to be treated just a few minutes after interviewing with a Nurse and even the same Nurse that interviewed me. At one point observing that some of those individuals didn’t appear to be in the pain I was in, a long time has passed…….. I finally got up and went to the front desk in obvious agony. The Nurse that was now sitting behind the front counter said “Sir, You will be called in just in a few minutes” with a smirk in her face. I simply said “No thank you, I don’t have times to play the games you play” and she immediately stated ok… with a sarcastic tone in her voice. I immediately walked out, walking slowly in obvious agony but also feeling a tremendous sense of being violated with the way this “so called emergency department” was so bias against me for some reason. I was able to make it to the exterior of the facility while my wife was running to get our car from the parking lot in order to take me to another medical facility in a hurry, not knowing how serious my injury was.
I eventually went to an Urgent Care facility of the same Hospital branch. I found they were much more sensitive to my needs and gave me the comfort and attention I expected from a Professional Medical Facility. I was diagnosed with “Acute Back Strain”, I was given a shot and prescribed pain medication for treatment.
Now, as I sit back and reflect back on the way I was treated at the Emergency Department of Baptist Hospital, I just wonder how many other people are mistreated, just because they perhaps don’t have the same color skin as the Nurse, or they are Hispanic or whatever the reasons might be. IT IS JUST WRONG to treat someone in agony and despair with disrespect. It will eventually give the institution “a bad name”.
Sincerely, Robert Marcelo
