Doctor Complaint: Dr Raines - Southern Maine Medical Center
Our pediatrician sent us directly to the hospital after my nine year old daughter tested positive for Type A influenza. They wanted her to have fluids and a chest xray and possible admission into the hospital.
I made her wear a mask into the hospital because I didnt want her to spread the flu. After I tell the woman at the front desk what the doctor had said she didnt seem to care and just told us to have seat in the waiting room. Once the triage nurse saw us and I told her that the doctor sent us right over and that my daughter had type A influenza she gave her some Tylenol and put us in a room right away. Another nurse came in, I told him that the doctor sent us right over and that she had the flu. Unphased he told her to put a johnny on and he would be right back. Two hours later he came back only to tell us how busy he has been all day. I again told him that the doctor sent us over and she had called over here and spoken to one of the doctors and he was expecting us. He said "yeah, yeah, we got the note and basically it said she looks like crap" and he left. Now I am mad but trying to hold it together for my child, who at this point is feeling bad for being there because the nurse is so busy. With flu epidemic killing children I think that the hospital of all places should be more considerate of the patients and communicating with each other. After 6.5 hrs sitting there we finally saw the doctor and when I told him she had the flu, he didnt even know that.Nobody had communicated to him. All of a sudden things started happening, she was put on precautions, got a chest xray, neb treatment and the iv fluids. I was so mad at this point and my daughter just wanted to go home to bed. We had the option of staying overnight at the hospital but I declined because if the care as an inpatient is the same as an ER patient I felt I could take better care of her at home. Thankfully, she began feeling better but still feels bad about making that nurse busier.
