Doctor Complaint: Mehta - Walter O Boswell Mem Hospital

I last saw my mom about 9:15-9:30 on Thursday evening 2/18/10 and she was in good spirits because she was getting better and talking about getting discharged to rehab in a couple of days. Mom was doing so much better they transferred from ICU to a regular room about 1:30 - 2:00 AM. (She had a fall risk bracelet on and was using oxygen.) Mom wanted assistance to go to the bathroom. The nurse sat her up on the side of the bed and then left her there unattended to go get a pair of socks, (slippers were not allowed). Consequently she fell, hit her head, cut it open and fractured her neck. BUT NO ONE BOTHERED TO CALL UNTIL 8:00 am the next morning. Upon arriving, my mom was in extreme pain, the oxygen level she was receiving was less than the doctor had ordered and a cervical collar was inproperly placed on her neck. In fact, they only found out she had a fracture because the ER doctor demanded a CAT scan to check for injury before he would stitch the wound on her forehead. And they never gave her any pain medication at all! Why would you transfer a patient at 2am? Why would you ever leave a patient unattended on the side of a bed especially one who was just transferred from ICU? How could not contact family immediately? How could you show such blantant disregard for a patients welfare and allow them to suffer so long in pain? I spoke with the hospital administrator and the nursing supervisor on the floor that morning and was further upset by the confusion as to proper hospital policy and the statement by the nursing supervisor that the nurse involved was one of the best! They had placed a cervical collar on her incorrectly. We demanded they fix it, they got another collar and put that one on backwards! Eventually they called for assistance. MY mom died later that afternoon, never knowing I was there; never knowing my dad was there. I left less than 18 hours ago upbeat that mom was doing better just to make start making her final arrangements. My Dad has Alzheimers and he lost his partner. I took him back to Florida to live with me. This experience at Banner Boswell demonstrated that they do not know what they are doing but more importantly, don't care. I requested a copy of the incident report because I wanted to know that they addressed these problems so no one else would loose a loved one but they hid behind Arizona law that says they don't have to give it to me. Why does the state allow such a coverup? Take some responsibility for your actions.
