Doctor Complaint: Nurse Jaya & Dr Langhf - Emory University Hospital
On or about 10 p.m., Saturday May 22, 2010, Nurse Jaya came into room G-552 to clean my son, Daniel Harris, trach. Instead of her removing the inner cannula Nurse Jaya removed the complete outer base frame along with the inner cannula and collar. I immediately asked her what she was doing ? She said that she was cleaning Daniel's trach. I informed her that the nursing staff does not remove the complete frame only the inner cannula. Nurse Jaya said they don’t remove all of it? I said, no! She said, oh. I asked her if she ever cared for my son or someone like him before? Nurse Jaya said yes. She then proceeds to put the complete trach back in, It was completely submerge in wet solution, I screamed at her and demanded that she not put it back in him wet. She then dries it off. While all this is going on my son is in deep distress!
I ran out of the room calling for the Head Nurse Annie to call the ENT doctor. Nurse Annie comes in the room and her and Jaya immediately start speaking quietly in a different language while my son, Daniel, is still in distress. It takes several attempts for them to be able to get the whole cannula back in. I ran to Nurse Beth and told her to come quickly to help them. Nurse Annie tells me she that she cannot call for the ENT doctor, and walks down to ICU and gets the Myrna, the respiratory specialist. Annie returns with Myrna and she tells Nurse Jaya not to administer the suction on Daniel again! Moments later Respiratory Specialist, Romanus, comes and I immediately tell him that Nurse Jaya took out the whole complete trach. He said that he will definitely talk to them.
Sunday, May 23, 2010, the Respiratory Specialist, Michal, tells me she heard we had a little bit of a scared last night. It was on a report that Daniel coughed so hard that his trach came out. Now I am doubly mad that Nurse Jaya lied about what has happen on the report. This is very serious, that Nurse Jaya would fabricate about this incident. Please keep in mind that my son cannot speak, he cannot do anything for himself, he is at the mercy of the nursing staff. I want this addressed to Nurse Jaya. She must be made aware and held accountable for her behavior that evening. Others that also went along with Nurse Jaya, in trying to cover-up her negligence should also be reprimanded.
I want action and a investigation to why she would falsify on a report, in saying that my son coughed up his own trach. Nurse Jaya should no longer be entitled to be employed as a nurse she and those who tried to cover up this incident violated their nursing oath and can no longer be trusted with the lives of innocent sick patients. I have no confidence in her nursing capabilities. Ms. Hill like I stated if she had a made an honest error that is one thing but to lie and cover it up and put blame on the patient how irony and shame full. It would serve me no purpose not to state the truth or the facts of the incident that night. My family and I want only the best for Daniel to state something untrue that didnot happen would not be in Daniel best interest, we love Daniel so much that we want no more harm to come to him, we want only positive energy around him, Daniel has already been through so much, the family has also suffered along side of him.
For Doctor Langhf, to be a professional and deny his patient the upmost care and to squash any doubt or concern Daniel family may have on this incident with his trach you would think he would want to put his patient first and check and have an ENT doctor exam Daniel knowing that there could be a problem. Its also irony that Emory Hospital puts out its own policy and procedure for trach care and that only a ENT doctor should perform removal or insertion of a trach, since that is not what happen Daniel should of have been allowed to be exam by a ENT doctor. By doctor Langhf refusal he has just violated the hospital policy and could be putting his patient at risk by deny his patient, my son Daniel Harris to such care. We want Daniel to be checked out by an ENT doctor immediately.
My name is Vickie L. Harris and I am the mother of Daniel Harris and this is my statement.
