Doctor Complaint: Medical Records Department - Emory University Hospital
I am preparing to retire from one of the U.S. uniform services and this process includes providing my medical records to the Veterans Administration. Over a 20+ year career I had obtained medical care at five different service providers, civilian and military. On July 8, 2011 I contacted all five providers with a request for all of my medical records. Two of the providers printed out my records and sent them within a few days of the the request. Two other providers were able to get my records to me within around 10 working days of the request. One of these involved over 100 pages of records.
And then there was Emory University Hospital. After not hearing from them for two weeks I called to make sure that they had my request. They said that they had indeed received the request and that they would have to charge me for printing out my records. I agreed to pay the charges and asked them when I might receive the records. They said that it would take around one week. That was in mid July. I finally received my records today, August 23, 2011. They required almost 2 months to retrieve 20 pages of records, and they charged me almost $1.00 per page for this service. Compared with its peers, the Emory University Hospital Medical Records Department leaves much to be desired.
