Doctor Complaint: Susan Warner, Np - Southern Ohio Medical Center
I have just returned from the emergency room having been mistreated and neglected. When triaged, I informed the triage nurse that I had just dislocated my right shoulder, put it back in on my own, then paid a visit to the emergency room to have it examined.
I am a disabled veteran who regularly is treated with Veteran's Affairs and have in the works a surgery to repair my shoulder to stop my recurrent dislocations. My surgery, originally scheduled for next month, was postponed due to a concern by my cardiologist. I was, however urged to seek medical attention if there was anything different about the typical manner of my dislocations. I suffer from chronic posterior dislocations and is no call for immediate concern. This evening at approximately 6:30pm, I suffered an anterior dislocation. Concerned about possible damage, I decided to follow my Doctor's advice and sought treatment to ensure there was no further injury to be made known to my Primary care provider and Orthopedic surgeon.
The following events are still fresh in my head and items, when quoted, are verbatim:
I was triaged courteously and professionally by their staff. Kudos to them.
I was then escorted to the patient room to be seen and examined by a doctor. At this time, I had no knowledge of my right to request an actual physician instead of settling with an incompetent nurse practitioner. Please note that I realize that the majority of nurse practitioners are able and credible alternatives to doctors when doctors are spread thin. In this instance, S.O.M.C. has failed in the hiring process or their nurse practitioner was having a bad night and her ability to be compassionate, professional, and thorough was lacking. This neglectful nurse practitioner's name is Susan Warner, NP. I waited in my room to be seen for about 30 minutes or so, dealing with outwardly racist people in the room I was sharing. I overlooked that and continued waiting until Mrs. Warner arrived. When she opened the curtain, she said in an implicative manner, "So you're okay, right?"
I said "No.". Before giving me a chance to speak she said, "Well, your shoulder is back in place and you were supposed to have your surgery in 2008, what are you here for?". I explained to her that my doctor urged me to come in if I had anything different than my normal dislocation to check for damage. She said, "All right, we'll do an xray!" and walked out of the room.
I am irate because she didn't examine me like a doctors is supposed to, and I assume it's standard practice. She didn't even come within 4 feet of me, in fact, she stood in the doorway where she had opened the curtains the entire time. She didn't ask what was wrong or how it came to be. She was quick, seemed irritated or tempermental, and I feel as if she was neglecting her responsibilities. You can verify that.
I am on medicare, so I don't have to pay out of pocket expenses for medical treatment. Honestly, if I informed them of the incident, they likely wouldn't want to pay for medical treatment, or the lack thereof, that I did/didn't receive last night. I am irate over this matter.
If online forums or blogs existed for me to voice my opinion regarding the way I was treated to help prevent this from happening in the future, I would flood them with posts or blogs all week stating the following:
"Susan Warner, NP, of Southern Ohio Medical is an Incompetent, lazy, unprofessional, and incompassionate caregiver. Enter at your own risk, otherwise, go to King's Daughter's Medical Center or Adena!"
I hope out of concern for their institution, this problem is addressed and properly handled.
