Doctor Complaint: Asad Naqvi - Crescent Pines

I was in the Cresent Pines facility from Aug. 5th for six days. My regular, long time doctor referred me to the facility’s day/out-patient program to help deal some stress I was going through. I was told I could register that evening (because of childcare concerns) and begin the program the next day. After registering & completing what was titled an ''Assessment Form', the MHA worker said that she could not let me go since there wasn't a doctor on site. She actually told me that she'd be forced to call the police on me. Just hours before, my very qualified and longtime psychiatrist referred me to the hospital’s day support groups, not in patient care. I seriously doubt this person was appropriately trained in determining my state of mind. I was extremely upset, as was my family. I had no way of getting in touch with my regular doctor and I had form of childcare for the following days ahead.

When I saw one of the hospital’s doctors the next morning (Dr. Asad Naqvi), I explained my situation as much as I could in the three minutes he saw me. He simply looked at me and said 'you need to be here'. I stressed the fact that I was not suicidal or homicidal and I was there against my will. I also told him of my childcare concerns. His ‘’medical conclusion’’ to me was : 'You look depressed'. This comment was very unprofessional and unethical. I spoke with both the social worker and the patient advocate shortly after that meeting but still got the run around. Their answer to me was – ‘The doctor has the final say when you are to leave’. I requested an AMA form which gave Dr. Naqvi 72 hours to discharge me. By the time I left, it was nearly 24 hours past my right to leave. My patient rights were violated!

In addition to Dr. Naqvi's emotionally absent attitude, he cut my anxiety medicine in half, which I had been taking for 10 years under the care of my family doctor and my psychiatrist. His explanation was ‘ You take too much’. And this was during our second meeting which lasted another good three minutes. The drastic change resulted in heavy withdrawal symptoms. I went through terrible body aches & pains and threw up for two nights in a row. I could not believe what was happening to me. I had not had this level of anxiety for over 20 years.

To all - beware of this unstructured, inconsistent and chaotic hospital. The doctors are only one horrible facet of this hospital. It is truly hell on earth. The following are only a few of the concerns I have regarding my forced stay at Crescent Pines:

The nurses and medical assistants are moody, loud and frequently ignore the patients. The doors are locked during the day. A stomach virus went around for three days and they refused to open the doors until ‘it was time’. Several patients yelled and cried because they felt it was unfair to be treated in this fashion, and I agreed.

Up to 30 people were stuffed in a room with one small tv. One day we watched a rather violent movie with guns, profanity and sex. Not once, but twice in a row, about 4 hours total. We were unable to go outside, we never went to the gym, never able to leave the small waiting room like setting until it was time for bed. The beds were hard, like concrete. The doors were left open and someone with a flash light entered the rooms every 15 minutes. There was yelling during the night, as well as slamming doors and people throwing objects.

We were on lockdown for violent behaviors from some of the patients. All patients, no matter what their diagnosis was placed in a mixed population. During my stay I primary heard about alcoholism in the couple of 'groups' that were provided – I do not drink. More importantly, the room was frequently packed with over 25 people and the door was always blocked. The room should have only held half that number. We are lucky there was no fire or other emergency. There were elderly people including two who required walkers.

It took me six hours and 3 reminders to get toilet paper and 2 full days to get a towel so that I could shower. The same people who cleaned diarrhea from one of the rooms was later the same woman who served me my dinner. Later I saw her emptying trash.

Next to the nurses’ station was a restroom that another lady and I had to use. This was primarily because the Adult ward became so full with new patients, we had to be moved to the adolescent’s hall. For two days we complained that there was a used (full) catheter bag in the floor and feces on the toilet seat. There was no toilet paper and the sink was dirty with hair. This was quite unsanitary and unsettling.

Medicine times were always late. People would be shaking and complaining of feeling nauseous, but there was no concern present. The times on my medicine would mysteriously get mixed up. Instead of every 8 hours for a PRN, it would suddenly be 10 or 12 hours. When I questioned it, I was always told to tell the doctor.

After two horrific outbursts by two different patients on the same day (one resulting in a lockdown), I told the weekend doctor (Dr. Godwin) that I didn't feel safe. His answer to me was simply ' Well, you are in a mental hospital'. Another uncompassionate professional.

There was a deaf lady on the ward and she was frequently ignored by the staff. Another woman who was in what I would call a ‘catatonic’ state of mind was left for hours at a table. To my knowledge, she urinated on herself twice and was left in her seat for hours before a nurse or MHA would tend to her well being. Because the nurses and MHAs gave her little to no attention, other patients would feed her, bath and dress her.

While on the subject of nurses and MHAs, I’ve never seen such a group of unprofessional people. There were a couple that made all the difference, but the majority let you know they hated to be there and they didn’t want to hear what you had to say. I personally heard them talking about other patients and laughing. One MHA that I feel it’s my responsibility to point out is Camille. This woman was loud, rude and talked to the patients as though we were 12 year old delinquents who had done something very wrong to be there. A person like her does NOT belong in a place like a ‘’behavioral’’ hospital. She would fit very well in a prison with hardened criminals, but not where anxieties are already heightened.

I am not the only who feels this way about Crescent Pines and their staff. You should be receiving many letters from others who were patients at the same time I was. I can understand if a couple of people felt like they were living in hell, but when you have the majority of folks complaining about the same issues as I have above, YOU SHOULD SERIOUSLY TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT YOUR BUSINESS.
I will be forwarding this information to my insurance carrier, the BBB, the Georgia Hospital Complaints board, and many, many other agencies to disclose how your hospital is run. I have notified my doctors as well and I can tell you that they were mortified at not only my statement, but two other patients who were at Crescent Pines within the past month.

To top the entire experience off, the woman who manages the collection of 'money owed' came running to my car as I was finally about to drive home. It was her second time asking how I was going to pay the 10% that my insurance would not cover. I will tell you what I told her - good luck with that.

This review is exactly as I would have written it. It has taken some time to get over my horrific 6 day stay in this prison like hospital. My doctor referred me here for the outpatient day program to gain coping skills with anxiety & depression - I checked myself in voluntarily assuming I would be coming back for the day program. The doctor that saw me for exactly THREE minutes (less the phone call he took while accessing me), told me "I LOOKED DEPRESSED"....and that was his diagnosis. He took away all my medicines that I'd been on for 15 years and my body nearly went into shock! The staff here is uncaring, loud, rude and should be in a prison environment. This is no place for someone with anxiety because mine was never higher than in this place. Dear God help the folks that go in seeking help.
