Doctor Complaint: Biral Patel And Others - Scott And White....rnd Rock
my journal of this is long so i'll capsulize as best i can..
went to s&w clinic for a steroid shot in my upper back for arthritis pain..had done this before with fairly good results..patel injected me and i went to a small recovery room to make sure i was ok before leaving..my wife accompanied me..was in the recovery for about 5-7 minutes when i got an excruciating pain in my back at the injection site. i've had kidney stones before and they were nothing compared to this..i yelled out, of course, and frightened my wife and a couple of nurses..in about 2 minutes after the initial pain my feet went numb and then my legs and then everything from my waist down..i was completely paralyzed..patel looked in but didn't say anything and they immediately took me to their emergency room in their hospital next door..there they did an CAT scan and then took me for an MRI..they had givrn me something for the pain so that at least got manageable..i arrived at s&w at 1:30pm and it was about 4:30 by now.
the emergency room dr - dr. brown,he was quite good - told me that the MRI showed that the shot had punctured a blood vessel and it was pressing against the spinal cord (thus the paralysis) and that i needed immediate transport to their large temple, tx facility for "possible" emergency surgery to keep me from being paralyzed permanently.
so, a helipcopter came and at 5:30 or so i was in temple at s&w in emergency there..i was seen immediately and had two great nurses..the emer room dr put me thru some exercises to see if i had any strength below the waist.
then, about 6:30pm i started to literally thaw out and in an hour i had complete sensation back.. they monitored me in emer for 6 hrs and finally, at 1:30am (after i'd raised holy hell) i finally got a room in the patient observation wing..with a guy that snored and had the trots..i finally got a bit of rest and my wife had the thrill of getting a recliner that wouldn't recline..
so, at about 11:00am on the 20th the doctor finally showed up that was to be the surgeon if necessary..he didn't do anything except run me through the same exercises all the other had and told me i could go home. this was a dr rahm..he did apologize for being so late.
here i am, thinking "will i ever walk again" and now i'm walking out of there as if nothing happened. the irony of it all is that at 3:30pm that day after we got home and i "finally" got something to eat dr biral patel called and said "it was a mistake by the radiologist who read the mri. there was no blood, just to much steroid in one place and it pressed against the nerves..BOY, did that make me feel good ?? all that crap for nothing.
i called the hospital "unhappy patient" line and it took over a week to even get a reply from them. i wrote a letter and sent my journal of events to the ceo via fedex and he never had the courtesy to reply.
finally, the patient relations called and said they'd absorb the tab i'd run up - the helicopter was over $20,000.00 dollars and the flight was 30 miles..the stay at temple was over $8,000.00 - all this for outright stupidity. AND YOU CAN BE DAMN SURE THEY BILLED MEDICARE and that medicare paid them..i will never go back there again for anything..they have a great rep but if they kill you it doesn't mean much, does it??
one last joke..when biral called and explained what really happened, he said, "next time i won't use so much steroid." next time??
to be fair. the emergency room nurses and doctors in both places were excellent
