Doctor Complaint: Rn Julie And Rn Karen - John C Lincoln Hospital
My husband came to ER complaining of weakness, no food or water all day, suffering from myelodisplastic syndrome, a blood disorder. He soiled himself laying on the gurney. RN Julie entered the room explaining that she usually worked the recovery area and she began asking questions for admission paperwork such as how much does he weigh, how long has he had symptoms. My husband's daughter,Karen ,then entered the room. She is an RN who also works for the hospital in the recovery area so she and Julie know each other well. My husband appeared asleep and I did not mind Karen's presence as the questions that Julie was asking were medical rather than personal. Then Julie asked if there was domestic violence in our house. I felt completely blindsided. I had never been asked this question in an admission before. In fact, during the last years of his life my spouse did strike me several times. I had seen a doctor for an injury after my husband struck me and my husband's physician prescribed medication for him but my husband refused to take it. I wanted to protect my husband's privacy but it was too late. I didn't want to lie. If I asked Karen to step out, she would already know too much. I lowered my voice and said "yes". I saw both Julie and Karen react to my answer. Fortunately she went to another line of questioning. Julie should have asked Karen to step out before asking me such a personal question. But it got worse. Karen misunderstood my response and went to my husband's family and told everyone that I was abusing my ill husband. Two family members then lodged a complaint to John C Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital and the hospital moved my husband to another room and put me on a "no visit, no information" status. Meanwhile, my husband signed a health care power of attorney over to his daughter Karen Roddy at her request. I did not see my husband for 2 days. Finally, the unit manager phoned me at home to inform me that the hospital would not honor the new POA document as the family had made alterations to the document. My visitation rights were restored. I still believe that JCLincoln hospital should have trained RN Julie on proper protocol during the admission process. My husband died approximately 2 1/2 weeks after his admission. Due to all the confusion and ill will caused by the sloppy admission process, my husband died in a Hospice facility rather than at home as he wished. The real story was never revealed to the family and the bad feelings about the abuse accusation persist to this day.
